9 Outdoor Additive’s Benefits

Outdoor Additive for milk paint confers a wide range of benefits to hobbyists and professionals alike who want to extend their usage of Real Milk Paint colors to the great outdoors. No matter if you want to paint your barn a vibrant Flag Red, bring bold color to wood fencing with Peacock Blue or tie landscaping elements together with your home’s trim with neutral Sage Gray, Outdoor Additive helps you achieve and maintain high-quality results that last the long haul.

Ensures Even Look

The finely milled borax used in Outdoor Additive ensures an even look when mixed with Real Milk Paint colors. This protective compound dissolves readily in paint formulations, distributes evenly and doesn’t change the tone or texture of hues, helping you seamlessly achieve the results you want in your outdoor projects, whether you’re refinishing your entire deck, adding some pizzazz to your front door or adorning a handmade bench to go under your favorite shade tree.

Additionally, Outdoor Additive for milk paint contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for eco-friendly crafting. It also mixes with other additives from the Real Milk Paint Co. This easy compatibility means you can help color stay put with Ultra Bond Adhesion Promoter and minimize foaming during the mixing process with Anti-Foaming Agent.

Prevents Mold and Mildew

Use Outdoor Additive in milk paint to prevent mold and mildew from damaging outdoor fixtures and furnishings. Designed to naturally inhibit the development of mold and mildew, this mix-in for Real Milk Paint works great for tables, chairs and design elements situated in moist or damp outdoor settings. This means you don’t need to clean or maintain your favorite porch or patio pieces as often or place them in storage during off-season, enabling worry-free enjoyment all year long.

Nontoxic Formulation

Get creative with your lawn and garden design worry-free thanks to the nontoxic formulation of Outdoor Additive for paint and wood. Both Outdoor Additive and the Real Milk Paint powder it mixes with offer a safe, effective way to provide deck, patio and porch furnishings with a dash of color. Keep in mind that though Outdoor Additive is nontoxic, it may potentially irritate the skin and eyes, making it a good idea to wear protective gear such as rubber gloves and goggles during handling and the mixing process.

Easy to Use

To use Outdoor Additive in paint, you simply mix it with Real Milk Paint. First, mix up your Real Milk Paint powder with water at a 1:1 ratio, then add the desired amount of Outdoor Additive. It comes in 1-cup packages specifically formulated to make 1 gallon of milk paint. The finely milled powder mixture measures out easily, letting you mix a pint of Real Milk Paint paint with 1/8 of a cup of Outdoor Additive. Likewise, you can make a quart of paint with 1/4 of a cup of the compound.

Works on Multiple Surfaces

Outdoor Additive for paint doesn’t only work on stripped or bare wood surfaces — it also works on a variety of other materials such as stone, concrete, brick and stucco. Perfect for period restoration projects due to the gently weathered look it provides furnishings after a bit of wear, Outdoor Additive and the Real Milk Paint colors it mixes with deliver an authentically chalky look that helps you add depth and character to antiques and handmade goods alike.

Protects Against UV Rays

Rely on Outdoor Additive for paint and wood to protect projects against UV rays. This Real Milk Paint mix-in inhibits ultraviolet light penetration, preventing the sun from destabilizing the paint color to keep your outdoor furnishings looking great over time. This extra sun protection makes Outdoor Additive a must for seating sets that catch rays at the hottest part of the day and decorative stones lining garden paths that see full sunlight all day long.

Inhibits Bacterial Growth

Keep bacterial growth at bay by adding Outdoor Additive to Real Milk Paint. When you can’t complete your project in one weekend or have some mixed paint left over from a completed task, Outdoor Additive remains stable in your Real Milk Paint mixture and inhibits bacterial growth, allowing you to use the premixed paint within its 2-week holding time without issues and reducing the need to mix more paint for smaller projects using the same color schemes.

Blocks Tannin Stains

Cedar and knotty pine wood sometimes bleed tannins (a naturally occurring acid typically found in wood knots) through paint, staining surfaces in the process and potentially ruining your custom design. Fortunately, Outdoor Additive for paint and wood blocks those tannins to keep your Real Milk Paint projects looking smooth and evenly hued for a beautifully polished appearance. This tannin-blocking ability also lets you get more creative with more rustic wood cuts, adding to the eco-friendliness of your personal and professional arts and crafts projects.

Great for Numerous Projects

Outdoor Additive for milk paint works great for numerous projects in your lawn and garden or on your porch or patio. Mix it with Caribbean Blue to add an ocean-themed aesthetic to wood planters, pair it with Persimmon orange to lend an earthy element to stone pavers or blend it with Barn Red to bring farmhouse flair to concrete birdbaths. Since it stays put within Real Milk Paint on multiple materials, Outdoor Additive expands your decorative options to help you create and maintain a pleasing palette in your exterior home design.

How to Use Outdoor Additive for Paint and Wood

When you’re ready to start projects destined for use on your deck, porch, patio or lawn, first mix up the Real Milk Paint shade you require to the desired consistency. Our powdered milk paint typically mixes at a 1:1 ratio with water, but you may want to add more or less water to your mix, depending on how thick or thin you need the paint. Additionally, if you want to add Anti-Foaming Agent to minimize foaming after mixing do so now.

Outdoor Additive in Real Milk Paint works best on raw wood and bare surfaces, so you need to strip away paint and finish before you begin. For best results, use our Soy-Gel Professional Paint Remover to strip away shellac, enamel and latex paint, and rely on this product to safely remove and encapsulate lead-based paints. Surfaces already coated with Real Milk Paint or other protein-based paints typically benefit from our Milk Paint Remover, which strips away up to eight coats, but you may need a solvent to help out if you’ve sealed those surfaces with shellac or lacquer.

Though Real Milk Paint application doesn’t require sanding surfaces beforehand, you may want to lightly sand the surface to improve the tooth, especially if you’re painting raw wood. Clean up the dust and debris using our Tri-Sodium Phosphate cleaner, and remove any iron stains from the surface with our Oxalic Wood Bleach. If there are any divots or dents you wish to smooth out before painting, put our Wood Filler to work before you begin adding color to your DIY project.

After mixing your Real Milk Paint shade and any other additives you require, add 1 cup of Outdoor Additive for paint and wood per gallon and mix the formulation again. For smaller amounts, use 1/8 and 1/4 cup of Outdoor Additive respectively to make a pint or quart of Real Milk Paint for outdoor use.

Now that you’ve mixed your Real Milk Paint, coat your project piece with the mixture and add additional coats as necessary to get the look you want. Once dry, you need to finish the painted surface with a reliable sealer to help it easily withstand the rigors of inclement weather.

Finishing Paint Mixed with Outdoor Additive

While Outdoor Additive confers numerous benefits to exterior projects, it doesn’t add water-resistant properties to Real Milk Paint. This lack of resistance means you need a sealer like our Outdoor Defense Oil to finish your DIY project when you want your Real Milk Paint hues to completely resist the elements.

Made with 100% Pure Tung Oil, pine oil and zinc, Outdoor Defense Oil offers a nontoxic formulation that provides additional resistance to UV rays and mold and mildew. This finishing oil is safe for food contact, making it a great choice for outdoor tables and butcher blocks, and it features a matte finish, so it doesn’t add sheen to Real Milk Paint covered surfaces.

Just like Outdoor Additive, Outdoor Defense Oil works not only on wood but also on porous surfaces such as concrete, stucco and brick for added exterior versatility.

How to Use Outdoor Defense Oil

Outdoor Defense Oil used for Finishing

Once the Real Milk Paint you applied dries, it’s time to seal the surface with Outdoor Defense Oil to ensure the piece resists water and holds up well to other environmental hazards. Begin by shaking the container well and pouring out what you need into a rolling pan or smaller container.

Outdoor Defense Oil flows best in temperatures above 60 degrees F, but it sometimes takes on a cloudy haze when it dries on the surface too fast under direct sunlight, so it’s best applied in early morning/evening, shady areas, or covered spaces. Designed to absorb deeply into wood pores without pooling on the surface, this sealer offers excellent protection with just 3 to 5 coats.

To apply Outdoor Defense Oil, brush, roll, or spray it on the Real Milk Paint-covered surface with a clean, lint-free rag, then let it absorb into the pores. Once it all goes into the wood or porous surface you’re sealing, repeat the process again and again until the surface simply doesn’t hold any more Outdoor Defense Oil. Remove any leftover sealer with a clean, lint-free rag and allow the surface to undergo the natural curing process.

Though Outdoor Defense Oil dries quickly, it typically takes around 30 days to fully cure. This sealer dries by polymerization, not evaporation, so oil trapped in the pores may sometimes rise to the surface during curing. If this happens, simply wipe it away. Be sure to keep surfaces clear of items while curing to prevent suffocation and ensure even coloration, and keep in mind that the curing process works best in a warmer area, so plan project placement accordingly.

Using Real Milk Paint for exterior projects helps you maintain your country, farmhouse or rustic aesthetic throughout your indoor and outdoor furnishings and decor. Using Outdoor Additive in milk paint helps pieces you place outside better weather seasonal conditions and inclement weather and keeps your DIY designs looking great without harsh chemicals, helping you feel good about the eco-friendliness of your projects.
