Natural Crackle detail image

With "Natural Crackle" you can crackle paint like a pro, creating faux paint finishes that have that antique old finish. You can create a heavy "alligator" crackled look or very fine hair line crackle glass cracks. Crackle paint is great for faux painting kitchen cabinets and unfinished furniture or for kids craft projects.

Natural Crackle is a natural non-toxic biodegradable gelatin. It can be brushed or rolled and dries to a clear satin finish. Natural Crackle is a collagen adhesive so you can use it to repair wood furniture, glue paper, cardboard and leather.

Application:
Natural Crackle can be used with milk paint and some other waterbase finishes. Always test other finishes first. It is applied over a sound surface before the final coat, and causes this final coat to crackle. The final coat of Real Milk Paint ® can be applied over "Natural Crackle" while it is wet or dry. When the finish is dry, it must be sealed with an oil base topcoat. Pure Tung Oil, Dark Raw Tung Oil, varnish or lacquers are suitable sealers. Water borne finish may ruin the work.

Advantages:

  • Dries fast - 30 min. to 2 hours
  • Thin with water for different effects
  • Will adhere to many surfaces, i.e.: wood, paints, varnish, metal, glass, drywall, previously painted surfaces.
  • Clean up with water
  • Long shelf life - 1 to 2 years without refrigeration
  • Non-flammable
  • Non-toxic, environmentally safe
  • Odorless after drying
  • Dries to a satin sheen
  • Apply with brush or roller
  • Freeze-thaw stable
  • Viscosity of syrup

Directions to Crackle Paint:

  1. Make sure surface is clean and sound (not flaking). Clean with TSP (Trisodium Phosphate), then rinse with water.
  2. Scuff sand surface with sand paper to promote mechanical adhesion.
  3. Apply "Natural Crackle" with brush or roller over Real Milk Paint ® or other porous surface. The thinner "Natural Crackle" the smaller the cracks. The thicker "Natural Crackle" the larger the cracks. To make large cracks apply two coats of "Natural Crackle" allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.
  4. "Natural Crackle" can be thinned with water to make it brush or roll easier.
  5. Final coats of paint should be applied over "Natural Crackle" when it is dry (30 min to 2 hours) There is no window of time to let "Natural Crackle" dry. You can let it dry 2 hours or 2 days, once the milk paint is applied over top it will crackle. Sometimes two coats of milk paint over the crackle will make better results. Just let the first coat dry enough that you can apply a second coat with out pulling the first coat.
  6. When the final finish is dry, apply an oil base finish over the crackled surface. Pure Tung Oil, Dark Raw Tung Oil, other Tung oils, varnish, lacquer, or shellac are all viable finishes. Do not use a water base finish or this may ruin your work.
